Declared a Natural Park in 1999, the Sierras de Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara lie on the border between the provinces of Granada and Malaga.

Sierra de Alhama, Parque NaturalThe area covers a total of 40,663 hectares, and includes four municipal areas of Granada: Arenas del Rey (Fornes and Jatar included), Jayena and Otivar, and eight municipal areas of Malaga: Nerja, Frigiliana, Competa, Canillas de Albaida, Salares, Sedella, Canillas de Aceituno and Alcaucin.

There is an abundant presence of birds, particularly birds of prey, and mammals such as the big mouse bat or the mountain goat, for which the area was declared a National Hunting Reserve.
